THE CHALLENGE
DOYLESTOWN, PA – Robert Kleimenhagen Jr, Director of Facilities & Energy Management Operations for Central Buck School District, knew he had a problem. The current practice of using outside contractors to maintain their twenty-three gym floors was not producing the needed results. With no room to expand the budget, Robert had to change their process to improve their results. That’s where Hillyard Account Manager, Chuck Lutes, got involved.
THE SOLUTION
Chuck and Robert looked at the situation and came to a single conclusion. Central Buck had to break with their long tradition of using outside contractors to strip and recoat gym floors and develop a program using a combination of Hillyard’s Trophy H2O water-based floor finish and Recon Micro-Layer Sports Floor Coating.
Over the course of a summer break, Chuck and Robert assembled a team of four custodians. Chuck trained this team to perform two processes, one for floors in poor condition and another for floors needing less rehabilitation.
The team would scrub and recoat the floors in poor condition using Trophy H2O. First, the team scrubbed the floor with an aggressive pad and Pre-Game Cleaning and Tacking Concentrate. Then they used the Multi-Flo XP finish applicator to put down a fresh layer of Trophy H2O. The Multi-Flo XP can coat an entire gym floor in under an hour. Because Trophy H2O is virtually odorless, the team could recoat floors without impacting other areas of the school. Seventy-two hours later, the floor was ready for play.
For floors in better condition, the team could scrub and recoat using Recon. First, the team simply scrubbed the floor with an automatic scrubber, Glacier P2 Melamine floor pads, and Pre-Game Cleaning and Tacking Concentrate. Once the floor was prepped, the team used the Multi-Flow XP to coat the floor with Recon. Fifteen hours later, the floor was ready to go.
THE RESULT
Before bringing their gym floor service in-house, Central Buck could only afford to strip and recoat two or three of their gym floors each year. Using the new Hillyard processes, Central Buck could service each gym floor in the district throughout the year without outside labor. And even with this higher level of service, they came in under budget by tens of thousands of dollars.
Robert also notes other benefits to improving their gym floor program. The students loved the improved gym appearance, and the custodians were proud of their work.
